Up until recently Trafford Borough Council approved only TX or Metrocab style taxis in its licensing areas. But during September Trafford Council held a thorough review of its licensing conditions to assess the types of wheelchair accessible hackney carriage drivers.
An event was held on 13th September at Old Trafford, Lancashire County Cricket Ground’s headquarters, where all manufacturers of wheelchair accessible taxis were asked to present their taxis to Councillors, local taxi drivers and other interested parties. Following this detailed review, the Licensing Committee made their decision known at the next Committee meeting on 16th October. The decision was made to approve the new PCO-approved Mercedes Vito taxi, but to reject the claims of other wheelchair accessible taxis. Roy McMaster, Head of Sales and Marketing at one80 who are responsible for the design and manufacture of the new Mercedes Vito taxi, said that:
"The decision to allow the new Mercedes Vito Taxi into Trafford was a victory for maintaining the best practice quality standards as represented by the Conditions of Fitness in London. Naturally we are delighted that drivers will now be able to choose from a range of taxis to include the Mercedes."
The Mercedes Vito Taxi has been on sale in London by KPM UK taxis since July of this year and the new taxi is now becoming an increasingly popular choice for London drivers.
